Paying Tribute to Claudia Bertaud

UPDATE: It's only been a few hours and we're so overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness that everyone has shown us. Myself (Linda) Cecilia and Yolanda are so grateful and we are at a loss for words. Our grandma, Ernestina, who is Claudia's mom, wants everyone to know that she is so thankful and that the stories and comments everyone has shared has been comforting during this difficult time. Our mom loved working with all of the kids, and even the ones that weren't in her class. The children are what kept her going, they brought her so much joy. We also know she loved all of her coworkers. This has shown us how loved she really was. Again, thank you all so much.

Hi all this is Linda, Claudia's middle child, we're located in Austin Tx. I am writing this story and will be giving updates on my grandmothers behalf because she is not the most tech savy person. The withdrawals will be sent to our grandmother's bank account, Ernestina Cabral, the mother of Claudia. All of the funds will be for funeral and medical expenses. We're not aware of the total amount right now, 5 days prior to our mom's passing the hospital had called saying the bill had reached $14k, I'm sure the amount is higher at this moment. She had to be airlifted in order to be transferred to Baylor Scott and White in Temple Tx from the Baylor Scott and White location in Lakeway. If there are any excess funds, it will go to an education savings account for Yolanda, her youngest daughter who is 11 years old.

Our mom Claudia first got sick with COVID a few weeks ago. We're not sure if it was due to her rheumatoid arthritis or if she had other preexisting health conditions that were unknown but she got very sick very fast. She had to be hospitalized and we were told that she would be medically induced into a coma and would need a ventilator because her lungs weren't getting enough oxygen. Things quickly worsened when the doctors told us her lungs and kidneys were significantly damaged, and that she had acid in her blood and would need dialysis. We remained hopeful, but then we were told a couple of days later that at some point during the hospitalization her brain wasn't getting sufficient oxygen and caused severe damage. The doctor said that our mom was not able to wake up on her own, and that she wouldn't be able to talk or eat and walk normally if she did wake up at some point. Our mom was always adamant about not wanting to live her life that way, so we as a family decided we would respect her decision. We were able to video chat with her and tell her how much she meant to us and that we loved her one last time, also that she was very loved by her family and friends. We asked the nurse to hold her hand for us, she said they would take good care of her and make sure she was comfortable. They disconnected her and she passed quickly and peacefully on July 28th at 6:15 pm. We will miss her so much and we appreciate all of the prayers and condolences that have been given to us and for us. The funds that are raised here will be for her funeral expenses and medical expenses. If for any reason any extra is raised, it would go to a savings account that would be for Yolanda, our moms youngest daughter who is 11. We thank you in advance and appreciate everything and everyone.

Muchas gracias.
