You know when you hear confronting news, and you're filled with that overwhelming feeling of wanting to help in some way, but you don't know how? And you wonder, what could do I do that could ever be enough, or even come close to enough? When I heard of Abbey's brain tumour, I cried. I was angry. Afterwards, I thought about how I could channel that anger and upset into something useful. What could I do that would be enough? I decided that I can't do it all, but I can do some. Lots of 'somes' make a lot. Maybe not enough, but a lot.
I taught Abbey in Kinder and worked with Justine (aka Madam Wonderful) on Kinder science activities over a couple of years. It was during this time that I built a connection to Justine, Abbey and their family. And what a fun connection it was! Abbey is one of those kids that light up the room when they enter it. A contagious smile and laugh and a sense of humour that could make up for a lack of anyone else's!
Abbey is beginning intensive treatment in Melbourne this week. I'm not going to explain the impact that this has on the family, nor the complications of the tumour, because I'm not living it. I don't know it enough, and for that I'm selfishly grateful. Abbey is losing her hair, Justine has shaved hers to help Abbey feel a bit better about her hair loss. Abbey talked about going wig shopping. Which got me thinking, could I be of some help, to somebody, by donating my hair to wig making? Or even by shaving my hair to raise funds for Abbey's family? It wouldn't be enough to cover everything that needs to be covered, but it would be a little bit of 'some.'
