Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) of Rutherford County, NC, a 501(c)3 organization, adopted The No Kill Equation in 2013 to stop the killing of animals in Rutherford County just because they were homeless. We have been successful in meeting the criteria for reducing the number of animals going to the shelter by spaying/neutering over 2,600 pets since February 2014, most for free to those on public assistance. However, there is much to be done when people are surrendering their pets because they are sick or old.
Over the last year, PAWS and our friends on Facebook have been able to help owners who would otherwise have to surrender animals to the shelter or put them to sleep merely because they cannot pay for the veterinary care they need. Unfortunately, none of the veterinarians allow payment plans. This has proven not to workfor them here.
Also, in the last year, PAWS and our friends on Facebook have provided medical, surgical and behavioral assistance to owners of over 60 pets, totaling over $12,000 to the veterinarians who have stepped up to offer a discount to our rescue for helping dogs of owners who cannot afford the care that the animal needs. We helped with emergency surgeries to three dogs: one was hit by a car, one was hit by a truck, and one was shot in the leg with an arrow We held fundraisers on Facebook and GoFundMe to help with those surgeries. One is a subject of this campaign.
PAWS is seeking funds for the dogs we are currently asking the veterinarians to care for. We have a dog that was hit by a truck. His front leg was de-gloved and the vet spent hours the same afternoon attaching the skin back to his bones. In additional, he has a broken back leg. His bill is currently at $869 for surgery and boarding. There is another $547.20 due when the back leg is amputated. He is currently in the veterinarian's hospital receiving treatment.
The work that we do to help owners who cannot afford to pay does not include any animals that are rescued by PAWS of Rutherford County, NC. We hold our own fundraisers locally and online to help our own dogs/cats.
This is Missy. PAWS of Rutherford County, NC was called yesterday afternoon for help. It seems Missy was starting delivery. It was a big surprise for her owner, who had just adopted her and was told by a veterinarian that she was not pregnant. Missy had her first pup and after 4 hours, she had a second pup that was stillborn. It was not known if another pup was coming but the wait time was too long. After the stillborn pup, PAWS called the local emergency vet and took Missy in. He took an x-ray and determined there were 4 or 5 more. At 3:00 a.m., Missy gave birth to her last pup. That made 6 live births and one stillborn. We are asking for help with Missy's emergency vet bill. We are looking for a rescue for her puppies when weaned. Missy will go back to her surprised owner, who loves her dearly but could not take pups. Missy is part of a family of dogs that PAWS has been helping. Two of her former pups were taken in. They had not eaten in days or weeks and their stools were mostly sticks and weeds. Missy has not had good nutrition, so PAWS will care for her and keep her in good health while the pups grow. We will need veterinarian costs for the emergency visit, plus follow up care for Missy and vetting for the puppies before they go to rescue. We currently owe $300 and will need an estimate of $200 for vetting for the puppies (shots, de-wormer, health certificates for travel to rescue when weaned). Goal is $500 for this family.

Roxy was injured by a hit-and-run driver in early September. She had extensive injuries to her back leg and nerve damage to her front leg. A fundraiser was held and we were able to pay off the surgery by a specialist in Arden, NC. After four weeks of immobility, Roxy was taken for follow up x-rays. A couple of the screws in the metal pin in her leg were loose. She was put on crate rest for two more weeks t let the bones continue to fuse. She was taken back on November 2nd and was released to normal activities, but no jumping or running. Now we will start to help her with the nerve damage in her front foot. She is able to put the paw down properly now. However, the veterinarian said she needs a brace to support the leg where the most nerve damage is located. Our follow up visits and x-rays are $180. A brace needs to be ordered so Roxy will be able to hold her weight and hopefully heal more from the nerve issues. The brace will cost about $225. So we are seeking $400 to continue Roxy's healing.

PAWS was contacted by a resident of a local resort and golf course regarding a colony of feral cats that were coming to the resort. The homeowners association wanted the cats removed immediately. Trap-Neuter-Release (aka TNR) is difficult when there are lots of cats that need to be spayed/neutered and returned to their home. It is much harder when the colony has to be removed and we have to find another location for them. This was a time sensitive matter or the cats were going to be headed to the county animal shelter. We were able to catch three cats a month or so ago, and the final four cats just last week. PAWS spayed/neutered all seven cats and moved them to a barn of a rescuer in our area. This was a happy ending of what was turning into a nightmare. While we were able to trap and send the first three to our low-cost clinic in Asheville, we had to take the last four to a local veterinarian who gave us a discount but not at the low rates we get at the clinic. We need $260 to pay off the balance of these TNR cats.

This is The No Kill Equation. All tenets of the No Kill Equation must be met before a community can be declared "No Kill". Many people think saving 90% of the animals at the local shelter will reach No Kill. That is a beginning number to strive for, not the end number. After reaching all other goals, then work to bring the 90% save rate closer to 100%.

The veterinarian acted so quickly that the repairs to the de-gloved leg seem to be doing good. There has been no dead skin and circulation seems good.

We helped this momma in distress last Saturday. Her owner called and said his dog was having puppies. He didn't know she was pregnant and couldn't possibly keep them. We went to visit him and momma had one pup. Over three hours later, she had on stillborn. After a couple of hours, we called in the emergency vet. He met us at his offices to determine if there were more babies and if a C-section was needed. His x-ray showed 4 or 5 more pups. He gave her a shot to induce labor again. She had five more healthy pups, ending labor at 3:00 a.m. We are asking for help with the emergency vet bill. We have found rescue for the puppies and the owner wants the dog back. She will be spayed before being returned to owner.
