On October 8, 2017, Paulo Tavares headed to the ER with strong abominal pain. In the subsequent days, he was diagnosed with colon cancer that had spread to his liver. He is currently at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, FL, with his family, evaluating treatment options.
On September 9th, Paulo and his family had been forced to evacuate their Tampa home (to Atlanta) in response to oncoming Hurricane Irma. Fortunately, Paulo's home was largely spared. The family was just beginning the recovery process when Paulo's initial medical symptoms began with sudden hearing loss on September 16th, leading to the eventual cancer diagnosis.
Paulo and family are strong, having moved from Brazil many years ago to build their lives here in the U.S.
