Paula Celik's Surgery For Torn Achillies

PAULA CELIKS STORY

I want to update you on my need for surgery and let you know how you can help!

Last Wednesday I tore my Achilles tendon during a workout, while rebounding off of a box jump (that’s why we step down people!). This injury has resulted in the need for surgery – currently scheduled for this Friday (April 13).

Due to a loop hole in my insurance, none of the necessary procedures are covered by insurance and so I am researching alternative options for payment and reaching out for help from my community. As the costs of the procedure are confirmed, I will make sure to post them here and keep you all updated as to what’s needed.

I’m working closely with a rep from my insurance to continue pursuing financial coverage for the procedure and post-op recovery. If this comes through – I will be sure to update each of you (and do a celebration dance!).

At this point Surgery is set to cost me approximately $8,100.00 and post-op therapy costs are yet to be determined.

A little about my Crossfit journey, and how this impacts me as an athlete:

A year ago, I made the decision to begin training as an adaptive Crossfit athlete. When I started this process I had very short-term goals: I wanted to qualify for Wodapalooza – an international Crossfit competition in Miami. With the help of my coach (Hank Aguilar), I qualified and went on to win my division at the January event! It was an incredible experience, and one that opened my eyes to all the possibilities available within the adaptive Crossfit community.

Upon returning to Chicago, I decided to continue competing and stepped up my training by joining Team WheelWod and receiving specialized programming by Stouty. The new goal was to be ready for the Adaptive Games in Canada (scheduled for July). The day I received my official invitation to the Adaptive Games was the same day it was confirmed that I needed surgery for my Achilles’ tendon. Because of this – my coaches and I have decided to place competing on hold for a season and place all my focus into long-term recovery. In order to be the best athlete I can be, it means taking my recovery seriously with a plan to resume competing once I am fully recovered.

I have seen first hand the amazing ability of a community to support its members. It’s what makes me love Crossfit, and it’s what pushes me to face this new challenge with courage.

I am so grateful for the support and compassion I’ve already received from so many of you – it’s humbling to say the least and it reminds me that I can get through this! I’ve depended on this support throughout my training process and it’s now that I need your support in every capacity!

Thank you for helping me conquer this challenge! I’m reminded once again that we’re stronger together!
