Paul Bloomberg: His story

Donation protected
Paul is a son, a husband, a dad, a brother, a grandfather, an uncle, a colleague and a friend. He’s a father of three beautiful girls Amy, Hannah, Georgia and step-father to Lucy and Jamie.

He is fifty five full of life, an absolute joy to be around and has a wicked sense of humour. What you see is what you get with Paul, he's a likeable guy and one that would do anything to help anybody.

Paul is a great sports fan, loves his football and his rugby, he’s a season ticket holder at West Ham United and a regular at home and away matches, he’s a true Hammers fan with a huge circle of friends. Over the years he has enthusiastically played football, rugby, golf and once ran a half marathon in less than two hours with no training and after an all nighter.

Paul is a construction manager on the London Underground 4LM - Critical Infrastructure. He is loved and respected by everyone he meets in his professional and personal life.

After a visit to his GP in April 2019 he was sent to King Georges hospital for a scan and blood tests, he was told the results of the scans were negative and he was given the all clear. Three months later he had severe stomach pains and went to A&E at King Georges Hospital and after further tests he was informed that he had colorectal cancer, which had spread to his liver.

Disappointingly whoever studied Paul’s scans three months earlier had misdiagnosed the evidence and given him the all clear. Taking the news on the chin, Paul was referred to an Oncologist at Queens Hospital, Romford.
After further tests he was informed his cancer (BRAF mutation) was extremely aggressive and would need an intensive course of eight cycles of chemotherapy which he battled through although the side effects made him very ill.
His Oncologist said that not many patients could have coped with this intense chemo and his scans showed that the tumours in his colon and liver had indeed shrunk.

He was admitted to the Royal London Hospital where he underwent major surgery to remove 75% of his liver. Unfortunately during the operation his bile duct was “nicked” a one in ten chance. He had a bag and drains fitted to help him heal, however this caused a long delay in his recovery and he suffered significant infections for the next three months and was in and out of hospital continuously. Also in this time, COVID19 hit and the hospital discharged him faster than usual, and when he was readmitted with severe pain from his internal infections, he was prevented from having any visitors in hospital during lockdown, including his loving and supportive wife Jacky.

His family, friends and work colleagues did their best to keep his spirits high through regular video calls and messages of support, he even received a personal video message from Ray Winstone, a fellow Hammer.

Paul managed to fight the infections, he was discharged from the Royal London Hospital and was returned to the care of Queens hospital. A new scan revealed that the cancer had now appeared in his lungs, his lymph nodes and re-appeared in his liver. All of which happened in the three months Paul was fighting the continuous infections and recovering from all the corrective procedures.

He took this distressing news with his usual brave resilience. On Monday 15th June, Paul was told that further surgery is not an option and chemotherapy is out of the question as the cancer will recognise the treatment and mutate against it. After a year of aggressive chemography, major surgery and multiple procedures, Paul has sadly been informed that his condition is terminal. Although there are no further treatments available by the NHS, there are some sophisticated high cost drugs being trialled that could suppress Paul’s cancer and extend his life expectancy. Paul’s Oncologist said he will try to apply for the treatment directly to the drug company on compassionate grounds, but this is not guaranteed.

Throughout this time everyone who knows and loves Paul has reached out to help and support him. In normal COVID free circumstances his family, friend’s and work colleagues would have organised various events to support Paul during his tough journey.

In light of this we decided to create this page to provide Paul the best support and explore every possible alternative treatment which is not funded by the NHS.

Your contribution will not only help Paul seek alternative treatments, but also improve his quality of life during this very challenging time.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Everyone loves Paul
