Hello and thank you to everyone visiting my site!
I have been asked to travel to Bangladesh in February, 2018, to speak on refugee maternal health at the 2nd HOPE Maternal Health and Fistula Conference Special Focus on Refugee Maternal Health. I am planning to speak on Infant Feeding in Emergencies: Lactation and Relactation, and Educating Midwives on Trauma Informed Care: Refugee and IDP Maternity Care. The city I will be going to is just on the border with Myanmar and has been receiving hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees escaping the genocide in Myanmar. The HOPE Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh currently operates 6 health clinics in refugee camps and expects to have 9 clinics operational by February.
I have also been asked to stay after the conference and teach skills training to the local midwives working in the refugee camps. This will hopefully include training midwives to incorporate trauma care in their maternity care. I will be working for both Midwives For Haiti and Global Motherhood Initiative, and I plan on being away for about two weeks.
More than 300 midwives, nurses and doctors from all over Asia are expected at the conference; just imagine how far new knowledge will carry!
I would also like to bring supplies for relactation for refugee women and teaching aids for the midwives' training. Research during complex global emergencies over the past 2 decades has repeatedly shown increased rates of infant survival with breastfeeding, and maternal and infant survival with skilled midwifery care.
As all three organizations operate with volunteer help, I am paying my own travel and living expenses. I am excited about bringing the knowledge I gained doing refugee work in Iraq this past year to another refugee situation where help is desperately needed. I have been so grateful for past support of my volunteer work and I am thankful again to each of you for keeping me in thoughts and prayers.
