Patriot List Veteran Family Retreat

A couple years ago, during a discussion about the veteran community, Colin and I were saddened by the increase in family struggles we were witnessing. The community was riddled with stories of couples who struggled to reconnect after returning from service. Their struggle, left unsupported, had devastating consequences for the children of the families. Together, Colin and I felt we could offer a program that supports the entire family through shared adventure, learning and reflection.
The four day retreat (October 20-23) this campaign is funding is a pilot program designed to create long term positive change in the family team of active duty combat veterans. Using mindful communication techniques, adventures and resources available to the families at a local level, we aim to provide a catalyst for growth and improved family team strength. A bit more backstory....
We have all heard of PTSD, and many of us know people experiencing the effects of it. When I learned from the wife of a friend who had returned from service that she felt she would never get her husband back - the man he was when they were married before he left, it broke my heart. Both are lovely people, both care deeply for one another, both respect one another, both love the other deeply. Yet, they were communicating on different wave lengths. They couldn't really understand where the other was coming from. Frustrations build up. Kids are caught in the middle.
While Move Mountains and Patriot List do not offer any theraputic services, we do offer shared experiences that give way to understanding. We create unique and memorable opportunities to establish improved communciation and compassion. We provide a lense through which each family member can see their family as a team, comprised of individual members with their own needs and struggles. We also partner with marriage and family therapists to ensure our participants have the proper support in place.
Why Tahoe? We offer Tahoe as a base because it has a certain component of natural heeling provided by the environment. It also allows families to distance themselves enough from their day to day routine to disconnect with the outside world and connect with one another. We appreciate the support of Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort Spa and Casino in Incline Village who is generously donating rooms for the families.
Where does the money go? These retreats are a labor of love for both Patriot List and Move Mountains and as such, the money donated goes to covering the cost of transportation, food and adventures. The facilitation on retreat provided by Patriot List and Move Mountains is donated as part of our contribution.
