The Patricia Leahy Fellowship

On May 31st, the Model UN community lost a dear friend and true advocate. Patricia Leahy dedicated her life's work to education and was a true dynamo that infused her enthusiasm for Model UN into her students for decades, touching thousands of lives not just in her own classroom, but globally.

Besides the hundreds of Model UN delegations she advised at Immaculate Heart of Mary and Hinsdale South High School, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Chicago International Model UN (CIMUN), which pioneered the now popular "Experiential" model 15 years ago and later brought together the establishment of the Model United Nations Development Organization. (MUNDO) Her efforts also went on to inspire and propagate programs in Seattle, Washington D.C. and Mexico City.

Pat Leahy's students have gone on to careers in government, journalism and public service, and many of them will tell you it started with her. Through CIMUN and MUNDO, her love of teaching and Model UN has also touched thousands of students from around the world that would likewise go into fields of social and public service, even if they don't even know her name.

Last year, the CIMUN established the Patricia Leahy award to recognize high school teachers who have made extraordinary contributions to the Model UN community. Now, MUNDO has partnered with Citizens for Global Solutions - Chicago Chapter, to expand this award to include a fellowship, including a monetary grant to the awardee to be used to innovate  Model UN programs in their own community or to expand the reach of Model UN to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

CGS-Chicago (aka World Federalist Association, Chicago Region) has already generously set aside $1,000 for this fellowship and we now appeal to all MUNers, or others who Pat Leahy has shared her love of Model UN with, to contribute to this program in her memory.
The Patricia Leahy Fellowship will be awarded at this year's CIMUN opening ceremonies on December 5th at the Hilton Chicago. For more information you can email [email redacted].

Information on the fellowship will be posted soon on www.modelun.net and www.cimun.org.
