The Penn Alexander Robotics Team has advanced to the FIRST Championship! We earned a ticket to the World Festival in Detroit, Michigan. The School District of Philadelphia generously contributed some of our costs but we need your help to get there.
The money raised by this campaign will support the four-day travel expenses for ten 7th and 8th grade team members, our fabulous science teacher sponsor and five chaperones. We need to raise the funds quickly so we can begin to make arrangements.
Our team has been working on this robotics project since September. This year’s challenge was Hydrodynamics – how we find, transport, use or dispose of water. We had to choose a water-related problem, create a solution and share that solution. We decided to tackle storm water run-off in our community.
Philadelphia has many tools in place to manage stormwater and keep our rivers clean, but we found out that most people with rain barrels do not actually empty them before a storm, making them obsolete. That’s why we developed a device that alerts the user when their rain barrel is full and it is time to be emptied. We hope to market our device and install it on rain barrels in our city and beyond.
We are so thrilled for this opportunity. Our public school is based in Philadelphia, PA and has experienced dramatic funding cuts in recent years, including many cuts in extracurricular activities. We feel very fortunate to be able to participate in robotics and appreciate the strong support of our parents, teachers, administrators, fellow students and the whole school community. We are excited to represent our school and will do our best to make you all proud. Thank you for helping make our robotics dream a reality!

We taught ourselves how to program and build a LEGO Mindstorms robot.
Our team color is purple - Nikola Tesla’s favorite!
