Pass the Hat-From Pana to Berklee

After performing,  musicians usually pass the hat and ask for tips. I have been passing my little hat since I was tall enough to reach the keys and play.  Now, at 18, I am willing to pass a big hat to fund my education.

I have loved the sound of the marimba since I “discovered” traditional music in my hometown in the Mayan Highlands. I always wanted to make it play a fresh sound.  Over the past several years, I gained admission to the Guatemalan National Music Conservatory to study our National instrument. In this musical environment, I was exposed to classics, world music and guest lecturers, who spoke of possible opportunities for further education. So, midway through high school, I had heard enough to form a clear goal: Go to Berklee.

My vision to fuse the marimba with other instruments, rhythms and “bring it all back home” is still evolving but has never looked more possible than since I got accepted into Berklee College of Music, Boston.

I need your help to finance the first semester because the United States is expensive. I know that I require support for my living expenses (over and above tuition) during the first months while I settle in and find a job.
