It dawned on me as I talked to Olivia (not her real name), a teenage girl, that she was the second generation of displaced individuals. Like her mother, Olivia is facing a daunting future. She and her unborn child are facing a life of poverty and instability. Olivia spoke of wanting more for her unborn child, but she admitted she doesn’t know how to be a parent. Her mother wasn’t there for her!
Today many teen mothers, like Olivia, are the second generation of mothers who lived in foster care, experienced homelessness, or are living in extreme poverty. These teen mothers want to live better lives and provide more for their children. But they lack the support needed to manage their children, develop career skills, and eventually have a full-time job. Too often, their children become another displaced generation!
Save Our Youth Transitional Living Home provides a place of safety, for teen mothers like Olivia while they learn parenting skills, get their GED, training, or education to pursue a career, and receive mental health services for issues that often prevent teen mothers from moving forward. Our on-site “mother mentor” teaches parenting skills, life skills, and provides needed motherly support. We are asking for financial assistance to provide these on-site and community-based services to Olivia and other teen mothers!
We believe that with the right type of support, we can interrupt the perpetual cycle of familial instability and poverty in teen mothers, like Olivia.
