Paraguayan Women's Water Project

There is a small agricultural community in rural Paraguay that consists mostly of subsistence farmers and monoculture growers (sugar cane, yucca, and Cameroon grass). There is a women’s committee of 120 families that grow medicinal herbs in this community. They’ve been trying for over five years to gain a partnership with a local supermarket chain so they can sell large quantities of the medicinal herbs they grow (these herbs have a large market in Paraguay because they’re used in terere, the national drink—think the equivalent of coffee creamer or sweeter in the States). The supermarket has written up a contract agreeing to partner with the committee, but first two things need to happen: The community needs to drill an artisan well, and the committee needs to build an up-to-health-code facility for processing and packaging their crops.

The supermarket has been hesitant to partner with our group in the past because of the lack of a reliable water source. Because there’s no well in the community, each family is given an allocated amount of water each month by the government that is barely enough to cover domestic needs, much less agricultural ones. So farmers are dependent on rains to grow crops, and this often leads to losing whole plantings to drought. The installation of a well would supply water for all families in the community. The processing facility would ensure that the committee has the infrastructure necessary to commercialize and grow.

The committee of women have spent the last few months writing up budgets, imploring with local NGOs, calling the local government, and having long community meetings. Pieces are slowly falling into place. ITAIPU, a local aid group has agreed to donate a truck so the committee can haul their products to market. The municipality has started construction to pave the road leading into the community (previously, any time it rained it was impossible to enter or leave). A generous community member has donated the title to the land where we can build. A well drilling company volunteered to inspect the land, approved it, and wrote up a budget for the necessary well. Community members have donated materials like bricks, wood, fencing, equipment, and precious time to help build the facility. Now the funds for the well and the system to deliver the water to their homes needs to be fund-raised, so we are asking for your help!

Christ Our Peace Church, located in Spokane, WA, will be collecting the funds for this project and is responsible for transferring the funds to the women’s committee in this community. All donations through this GoFundMe will go to Christ our Peace and then to this community to build the well. Thank you for joining us in this effort to empower these women and this community in their dream! This project will transform their lives, thank you for being a part of it!
