For the second season in a row, the Periodic Pandas of Westford, VT are moving on to a post-season international competition. Our FIRST Lego League team had a fantastic showing at the Vermont state finals and will be representing the region at the FLL International Open in Carlsbad, CA May 18-21. Way to go Pandas!
Finding funding for post-season academic competitions is challenging, and that is why we need your help. Our goal is to reach out to families, community, and sponsors to help defray the costs of travel and accommodations for our team.
Your donation will help send our team of 10 students (grade 4 through 7) to compete in this prestigious event. The excitment and love of learning science and engineering is evident with this group. They have worked very hard to earn this honor.
Our robotics club is part of Westford School (donations are tax deductable). Our coaches are volunteers and all club expenses have been self-funded through outside donations and sponsorship.
The FLL International Open invites 75 teams from across the globe to compete in four areas:
Robot Design--Mechanical engineering and coding / programming to design and build a robot capable of maneuvering and completing complex tasks on a game board
Robot Game--2.5 minutes of intense competition to run the robot code in hopes of successfully completing the most tasks and scoring points
Project --Identification of a real-world problem within the year's theme, then research and innovation process to design an invention to solve the problem, build prototypes, work with experts, and present the invention
Core Values --The foundation of teamwork, discovery, learning, and sharing our knowledge in a gracious, professional way
This year's theme was Hydrodynamics. With awareness of the devastation wrought by hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria in the daily news this fall, the team's innovation project aimed to solve the problem of waterborne disease outbreaks that arise from natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
The students’ invention (dubbed “Wastewater2Go”) was a self-contained, mobile wastewater processing system that could fit inside a 20 foot shipping container. The Periodic Pandas did a great deal of research to design, spec, and build a prototype model of a system capable of serving the wastewater needs of 1700+ people per day. This concept could be deployed quickly and cheaply all over the globe to save thousands of lives that may otherwise be lost to illnesses like cholera and dysentery.
