PAN AFRICAN LIBRARY OF THE GAMBIA

Brick by brick, book by book...help us build a library in The Gambia!

Isn't it amazing that all children have access to culturally affirming books! I wish that were the case for youth in Africa. You can help us to make access to culturally affirming books a reality for youth in The Gambia, the smiling coast of Africa.

There have been no shortage of programs developed to provide books to youth in Africa. So what makes this effort any different you might ask? What sets this effort apart from all the others is that it is both FOR US and BY US. Elijah Muhammad said “ do for self, or suffer the consequences”! The heart of the the Pan African Library of The Gambia is to tell our stories, in our own voices. From The Gambia, to Canada, to Madagascar, to the West Indies, to South Africa, to Britain, to the United States to Brazil and beyond. Kwame Nkrumah said “ All people of African descent, whether they live in North or South America, the Caribbean, or in any part of the world are Africans and belong to the African nation.” Let us unite our history through the unity of books.

Dr. Amos Wilson says in his book Awakening the Natural Genius of Black Children that “ miseducation is ultimately an act of war, an act of possible genocide.” For far too long Africans on the continent have been miseducated about Africans in the diaspora and vice versa. When I was a youth, the only images of Africa and Africans that we ever saw were starving children with swollen bellies, covered in swarming flies. We can correct this miseducation by unlearning and relearning the truth of our history.

It is time that we reignite the stories of Douty Boukman, a native Gambian, and the Haitian Revolution. We should return to our Roots, like Alex Haley, descendant of Kunta Kinte. Your donation will allow us to ship almost ONE THOUSAND books to start filling the library with culturally relevant and culturally affirming stories and history. It will also give us the ability to secure a space to house the Pan African Library of The Gambia. There is a Gambian proverb that says “ Giant silk cotton trees grow out of very tiny seeds.” Every donation will help us to reach our goal, no matter how small or large. If 10,000 people donate $1, we’ve reached our goal. lf 5000 people donate $2, we've reached our goal. If 2000 people donate $5, we've reached our goal. If just 1000 people donate $10 we’ve reached our goal. We know that with your support our goal is easily attainable.

May the Creator bless what you give, and what you keep.
