Get Pam Bean to the very promising ALS Clinical Trial at UC Irvine.
What Happened:
After being married to her high school sweetheart, Joe, for 43 years and raising a family of three children, my mom has overcome breast cancer, juggled full time jobs and the schedules of raising the three of us, been a loving daughter, mother and wife and has been the pillar holding up her family for as long as I've known her. She is the strongest and most beautiful person inside and out. I love her for all that she has effortlessly done for so many people in her life.
And now this devastating illness is threatening to take everything from her.
No one’s loved one should have to witness and suffer with what ALS is doing to my mom. In just a few short months, she has lost the ability to walk, to be able to speak, even to dress herself or to brush her beautiful hair. These are all things that we take for granted everyday. Imagine slowly becoming a prisoner in your own skin, your body refusing to do what in your mind seems so normal and natural. Your words won’t even leave your mouth, completely cut off from the world as your mind is trapped- completely healthy and functional.
With her bravery and determination, Pam is fighting ALS and you can help her.
Pam is seeking treatment for not only herself, but true to her form- she is selflessly still helping others while fighting for her life. She is part of a groundbreaking experimental clinical trial at our own family’s expense that will hopefully rid future generations forever of this killer disease.
Please help us stand up for my mother, because ALS is keeping her from doing so for herself.
There is no way to describe how it feels to watch such a vibrant and strong person that you love so much just disappear before your eyes, while it feels like there is nothing you can do to help- but there is.
With just a small amount of support, we all can help a woman who has done so much for those around her for all of these years. With the success of her treatment and with hope all around the world and her bravery- we all can play a part in a future where no daughter, no son, no mother or father, husband or wife will ever have to watch this terrible disease again.
What Is ALS:
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and Motor Neuron Disease, causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles. ALS is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size, resulting in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. Pam has a rapid progression type of ALS. In a few short months, she has gone from life as usual to wheelchair bound and needing assistance with all daily activities. Currently, the only FDA approved drugs to treat ALS extend life expectancy by around 2- 3 months.
What is NurOwn:
This is where Brainstorm's NurOwn comes in. They are in Phase 3 of the clinical trial that is showing incredible results as a long term treatment that not only slows progression, but actually reverses damage to the motor neurons, thereby increasing mobility, independence and life expectancy greatly!
What Donations Will Cover:
To participate in this life saving trial, my mom and dad have already made several trips out of pocket to Irvine, CA and will be making many more over the course of the next year. This is obviously a very expensive endeavor, made more so by the need to find handicap accessibilty. Over the course of the trial, she must be in Irvine, CA every month. Donations will help cover cost of travel, temporary housing, food, and upkeep of primary residence.
