Palu Disaster Response

On 28 September 2018 a 7.4 M earthquake struck Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi.

This was followed by a tsunami that struck the west coast of Sulawesi, impacting Talise beach in Palu City and the beach in Donggala:

• 50,000 people displaced

• More than 1,400 people killed

• 600 people with major injuries

• Disaster victims requiring humanitarian assistance

On top of the 1400 people killed, 1000s of people are still feared to be buried under buildings and earth. 

I will be part of the Disaster Response Group's (DRG) Backpacker Medical (BPM) Team. 

As a member of the Backpacker Medics Disaster Relief Group I have the honour joining a 6 strong team of highly trained and capable medical and logistical professionals for a two week tour leaving on Saturday the 6th of October - which is tomorrow morning! We are completely self funded and rely on your help and generosity to get us there and provide the aid these people desperately need. Please give whatever you can. The initial goal will be to cover flight/travel expenses to help me on the ground, any funds over and above the goal will be donated to the Backpacker Medics Disaster Relief Fund. 


Who I am and where I'm from:
 
I am Sara Lavis from Perth, Australia. I am a Registered Nurse with 9 years Emergency Department experience in a trauma hospital.   

My relationship or contact to the parties I'm raising funds for: 

I am a member of a 6-strong medical and logistics team tasked with accessing the widespread devastation caused by the earthquake that hit districts of Palu. We will be field operating from temporary treatment locations in the most affected, remote parts of the region. I am raising funds for myself in order to be able to deploy on this mission. 

How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible):
Funds will be spent on travel - flights from Perth to Palu and medical gear. The remained will be spent on food, communication, and internal travel once in situ. This will also include sourcing more medical supplies on the ground, bought locally. 

You can still donate while I am away, all funds will go to assist in the care of the locals in the area.
