Paloma's Family Hurricane Recovery

Friends and family,

I am from Carolina, Puerto Rico, a town close to San Juan and one of the areas that was completely devastated by Hurricane Maria after also being hit with Hurricane Irma just a few days before. Last night I was finally able to briefly speak to my mom and brother via Skype and learned that my family's situation is much more dire than I anticipated.

My childhood home that my father built with his bare hands is completely destroyed–most of the roof was ripped off, the cement walls that hold the back portion of the house have crumbled, and surrounding trees have decimated our patio, shed, and kitchen. And even though we live in a non-flooding area–and therefore have no flood insurance–water flooded the main part of the house.

Because we have no insurance to cover these damages we are unsure how we will begin to rebuild. My mother is a widow with limited access to funds, so I am looking for any support from my friends and family to help us through this next phase of rebuilding.

It will be a very long road for my family–and all of Puerto Rico– to repair what was lost and any donation will be greatly appreciated by my family and the people of Puerto Rico.
