Off to Uganda I Go

Hello Family and Friends! I’m writing to ask for your help. I have the opportunity to travel to Kaberamaido, Uganda this summer with a small group from Point Community Church, located in North Brunswick, New Jersey. I will be traveling with a family whose daughter I teach in Fifth Grade. The Children's Hopechest partnership has enabled the DeAndreas (family of my student) to connect their local church family, Point Community Church, with their kingdom family in Kaberamaido, Uganda. Traveling to Uganda is going to be a life-changing experience, but I would like to raise some money in order to fund the trip. Would you consider a one-time donation?
Children’s HopeChest provides places of refuge where orphans and vulnerable children can have their basic needs met and receive consistent practical, spiritual, and emotional support. Families from the church and outside of the church, sponsor about 150 children in Kaberamaido, enabling teams who visit Kaberamaido to share resources and support with families there. The ministry is focused around the CarePoint, where the children come to have a daily meal, spend time with team members, some who know the children well and keep in touch with them, and play together. Due to the assistance of HopeChest and their team members, the children now have a building with meeting rooms, a storage area, outdoor kitchen, pit latrines, a well, and a large play area. Ultimately, these relationships and resources empower orphans to survive, thrive, and succeed within their home culture. Over Christmas, enough money was raised to purchase over 10 acres of land, which occurred this past weekend! It will be used to teach the kids more efficient farming skills as well as to grow food for them to eat at the CarePoint. The exciting thing about this is that it is the first major step towards the children becoming more self-sustaining. They will be able to grow a variety of crops, thus improving their diet. Also, if they have a good growing season they will be able to sell the extra at the market. Another big thing is that as we have more and more children approaching secondary school age, which costs more, it frees up some of the monthly sponsorship dollars that usually go towards buying food. Then, the money can be used to pay for the higher school costs.
Based on the stories I have heard from others who have traveled on this trip, their presence was a gift. The children knew that they had spent time and money to come across the ocean from America to be with them, because they cared and loved them. And that’s what they wanted, needed – us – to encourage, love, listen, hold hands, play. The children in Uganda have seen and experienced unspeakable things. They live with violence, AIDS, hunger, despair. And somehow we represent hope. Our presence reminds them that there are people who sees them, cares for them, loves them, and provides for them. During this visit, we hope to spend time with many of the children, essentially act as moms and dads for the week, hear more of their personal stories, sing, do some crafts, visit their homes, and end with a big feast. We will also be tutoring the children through reading and the use of flashcards, and hopefully put their new 10 acres of land to good use!
Through donations and extra summer work, I am hoping to raise a portion of the trip’s expense, which will be giving to the needs of the Kaberamaido children.
