Palenke Greens Initiative

Donation protected
Our names are Ariel & Jess, community organizers and founders of the Iyé Creative, a Communal Social Enterprise who understands and is a result of the current situation, we focus on supporting communities to co-create as a whole. By learning, adapting, and scaling more effective solutions to entrenched social problems, we’re making our human and natural systems more adaptive and resilient.

We care about our people

Our motivation came from a concern over the underlying race and class inequalities which continue in major spaces and initiatives for alternative food within Victoria. PALENKE GREENS (PG) are burlap sack gardens, who in STAGE I, are prioritizing people of African descent who are facing food insecurity and have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and are interested in gardening, cultivating the Ubuntu spirit of communal self-reliance.

Further, we prioritize the stories and voices of black, local indigenous and other racialized groups to centralize their participation as key actors, in order to work towards generating abundance and creating conscious communities that believe in growing their own food.

When

We are hoping to start in mid-June, 2020  by running a pilot project to get a firm and realistic sense of the need for and the acceptance of the project within the community.

By subdividing the project into 3 stages, it will help us to spread the word within our community, give us an opportunity to identify areas of improvement, and connect people from all around Greater Victoria to this important initiative.

Stage 1: Mid June // Pilot project for 10 families
Stage 2: July // Another 40 Families
Stage 3: September // Come together with the fruits of our harvest in a Palenke Greens Harvest Celebration.

Fueling

Over the past weeks, we’ve felt outraged that recent world events have increased the disparities and social inequalities amongst indigenous, brown and black bodies. We truly believe that PG will go a long way in helping numerous barrier-facing families with some essential greens, in addition to creating a Food Sharing Network. We believe that together we can work towards generating abundance in our community, and would love to have your support in this.
