Race kayaking 125 miles to create native woodland

Tax deductible
We (Doug Reid and Tim Baker) are taking on a very tough challenge at Easter this year: the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon. This event, often referred to as the ‘Mount Everest of canoe races’ has been running since 1950, and comprises a 125 mile course on the Kennet and Avon canal, and later the river Thames, with 77 ‘portages’ around locks on the way.

We will be attempting the blue riband ‘straight through’ version of the race, i.e. a non-stop effort which is likely to take around 24 hours. We will be paddling a two-man K2 racing kayak, and will receive food, drink and technical support from our six strong support team at various checkpoints.

To complicate matters we began learning to paddle marathon racing kayaks in September 2018, under the excellent coaches at Fowey River Canoe Club in Golant, Cornwall.

While we both stand to derive great personal satisfaction from this event, we both feel that this will be an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and money for a charitable cause. We are therefore partnering with local charity Moor Trees to raise awareness and money for the excellent cause of creating native woodland in the South West of England.

We have set a target of £100 per mile (£12500 in total). We would be delighted if you could help us.

More information about Moor Trees: We plant trees. Not just any trees, but natural, native trees, trees that have been part of the English landscape for thousands of years. We grow them from locally collected seed in our own nurseries, nurtured by lots of local volunteers and then used to recreate woodland that has become a rare sight in the countryside. Our trees are planted across Dartmoor and Devon. These woodlands are also offsetting some of the carbon that we all produce as part of our modern lifestyles.
