My brother was heading home from school where he studies Culinary Arts in Caracas, Venezuela when an armed gunman attempted to rob him for his phone. With all the political turmoil in Venezuela, vital resources have been scarce and unfortunately criminal activity a common place. It was in broad day light near an academic building that a gunman shot my brother in the chest where the bullet neared 2cm from his heart, affecting his lung, liver, and pancreas. A Good Samaritan brought him into Policlinica Mendez Gimon where a 4 hour operation awaited him. It is a real miracle he is alive.
My brother has as of today received 8 units of blood and will undergo a series of examinations to determine the cause of hematomas which have arisen as a result of the gunshot wound. We are constantly being updated by people who know and love Marcos who tell us he is still in the Intensive Care Unit where he is under rigorous observation and care. He is hooked up to medical equipment which help him perform breathing and cardiovascular functions. Marcos still needs a medication that has been near impossible to find in Venezuela and I fear the worst.
My brother has been described as a "bull" by many of the doctors and nurses attending to him as he fights for his life. In spite of this, I am afraid he has not talked in two days and I will not see him in time of his recovery because of US travel restrictions.
I am kindly asking that you please help raise funds for my brother who has also been a brother to many of you. He is a caring son, father, and brother who really needs your immediate support in order for him to begin to walk and talk again. We have been told it will be a very slow recovery period, so we want to ensure Marcos has absolutely all of his medical needs fulfilled to have the best chance at survival.
Other ways to help: Approximately 30 willing blood donors are needed to replenish the blood bank at Policlinica Mendez Gimon in Caracas, Venezuela. (Marcos has already used 8 units of blood)
