Help Myles get a smile

Hello all, my name is Karen.

This is my youngest son Myles who unfortunately inherited my genetic medical condition called Ectodermal Dysplasia. Sufferers of this condition have a lack of sweat glands, poor hair growth and many missing and misshapen teeth.

In Myles’ case he has only ever had one tooth. The rest are simply not there and will never grow due to his rare condition.

Dentists have recommended that he needs dental implants for a permanent solution and this is the only way that he can be provided with a full set of teeth.

We have consulted with the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital who initially offered to cover some of the costs. Unfortunately after several further appointments they rejected his case. They told us that only cancer patients and accident victims can be funded. This has left Myles with no other option but to ‘go it alone’.

Myles needs four implants inserted into his bottom jaw and due to his lack of bone growth in the upper jaw, he needs four specialised implants to be inserted into his cheek bones. This operation can only be performed by a specialist maxillofacial surgeon. A prosthodontist will then make and attach the teeth.

Myles is a friendly young man but having a proper set of teeth will give him that necessary boost of self-confidence.

The sooner he can have this treatment the sooner he can get on and enjoy life to the fullest.
