Afar Media International (AMI) is an independent media organization whose primary mission is to serve and keep Afar people reliably informed about local and regional news. We intend to launch soon!
The Afar are an ethnic Cushitic people inhabiting the Horn of Africa, namely Djibouti, Ethiopia and Eritrea. They speak Afar, which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic languages.
Although the Afar territories are of great geo-strategic, economic and geopolitical importance in the Horn of Africa, the Afar people remain politically marginalized and socially and economically disadvantaged in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. The Afar regions have also been deprived of development due to: (a) instabilities maintained by the Federal Government in Ethiopia (e.g. the case of the Afar Regional State, Ethiopia); (b) an economic blockade imposed by the Djiboutian government (e.g. the case of the North and South-west regions of Djibouti); (c) and the ethnic cleansing of Afar people in Eritrea.
The media owned and controlled by governmental regimes does not report issues involving Afar and the injustices committed against them remain unknown to the outside world. As a result, the voiceless Afar people continue to be vulnerable to the brutalities of repressive regimes.
To end the continuous oppression of Afar people, it is vital to create Afar Media International (AMI). The main purpose of AMI will be to: (1) educate Afar people and the general public about the social, economic, and political life of the Afar people; (2) connect the growing Afar diaspora to its homeland through satellite television and radio; (3) bring much needed attention to under-reported issues in the Afar regions; and (4) expose human rights violations and atrocities perpetrated against Afar people in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti by the current regimes.
Afar Media International (AMI) will also aim to promote civic discourse and foster community engagement around social justice issues, human rights, democracy, community health, family and child welfare.
The effort to launch Afar Media International (AMI) has been undertaken over the past few months. To realize the long-waited dream of our people, we call upon the entire Afar diaspora, concerned citizens, and the international community to donate and support AMI. We will use your financial contributions to purchase the necessary equipment, to pay rent, and to cover other expenses.
It will take only 600 persons contributing $100 each to raise $60,000 to start our own independent media network.
