Oxford Lion's Club Save the Park

Donation protected
The Oxford Area Lion's Club has served our community for almost 60 years.  We built an arena, tennis courts, basketball courts, a community hall and a playground, in addition to funding many charitable causes and needs in the community.  The park land we have been developing is used by the community and travelers coming into Nova Scotia.

Where the park is currently there is a lake, a small forest, a swimming area, our hall and room for families to play.  It has been a wonderful location used widely by many people.  In the summer we sponsor swimming lessons in the lake.

The Hall has hosted weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, community groups like the Scouts, Girl Guides, healthcare programs, mental wellness and even Breakfast with Santa.

Recently, a large sinkhole began to develop in the park.  It forced us to close the park and to tear down the playground or risk losing it into the sinkhole.  The loss to the community cannot be measured in dollars, however, if we ever hope to re-establish the park we will need significant amounts of money.

We have two scenarios.  If the sinkhole stops growing, it is possible that we may be able to re-open the park.  If it continues to undermine the parkland, it will not be safe for anyone to use and we will have to find a new home for the facilities.

Either way, we need your help to continue to provide these types of facilities to the community.  Every day we learn more about our sinkhole.  It has been reported that it has stopped growing but instead is "rounding out".  We have been lucky that there has been little rain.  As you can see, the soil is sandy.  A strong rain may further undermine the ground and cause the hole to continue to grow.

Immediately, we have to put up a fence from shoreline to shoreline to keep the curious away from the hole and safe.  This will cost thousands of dollars.  It needs to be done quickly as we currently have only a temporary fence and the Town of Oxford is providing 24 hour security, which is costing a significant amount of money.

Then we have to either re-establish the playground and remediate the hole or find a new place to locate the park and rebuild from scratch.  The playground alone represents an investment of $140,000 by the Club in our community.  The Hall would likely cost $250,000 to replace.

As you can see, we are in a difficult and desperate situation.  We have started this campaign so that the Lion's can continue to serve our community.  The alternative is simply unthinkable.

If you can donate we will be eternally grateful.  If you can't, we understand but ask that you spread this campaign.

Together we make a difference because we chose to do so.
