Owen Sarver is the 3 year old son of my coworker Tessa and her husband Mike. Until recently he was a healthy kid.  On May 23, 2018, Owen was diagnosed with Pre B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He has already had surgery to place a central line in his chest and started chemo. Over the course of the next 3.5 years we can expect Owen to go through dozens of rounds of chemo, many more lumbar punctures and bone marrow biopsies. Chemo will be given through his central line, orally or intrathecally (straight into his spinal fluid). Unfortunately, insurance has decided not to cover Owen’s oral chemotherapy so the family will be required to pay for that out of pocket. They will also be responsible for deductibles for all inpatient stays, and procedures. Medical supplies for dressing changes at home, and maintaining the central line will also be a cost the family has to pay for.  The financial burden is quite large for this family who is hoping to do everything in their power to cure Owen of his cancer.
