Owen has a new heart!

Hi everyone,

Last month Sally and Charlie's son and my nephew Owen (25 years old) walked himself to the hospital because he was having difficulty breathing. He thought this was related to the fires on the West Coast and expected to be discharged the same day with an inhaler. Instead he collapsed in front of the hospital and went into cardiac arrest. His hospital stay ended up lasting almost one month.

Doctors at the University of Washington discovered that Owen had a congenital heart defect. His situation deteriorated rapidly and he was put on life support. After several harrowing days (it felt like weeks) doctors were able to map his heart and prepare for a transplant. Soon thereafter a heart became available. We were so happy for Owen yet so sad for another family’s loss. We are incredibly, incredibly grateful to them - they saved his life - and we hope that you will consider becoming an organ donor if you aren’t one already.

The surgery was a success and Owen has been recuperating for the past two weeks. He was discharged from the hospital yesterday, which is great news for Owen but also a bit scary. While Owen has been extremely positive the entire time (and I have been extremely proud of him for this), reality is setting in. He needs to stay in Seattle for 3-6 months for physical rehabilitation and antirejection medication management, and will need to go to the hospital on a daily basis for the foreseeable future. He needs to pay for rent, co-pays and expensive medicines on a reduced income. And his mother Sally (for those who don’t know her, one of the most generous people on this planet) is caring for him full-time. She is losing income and paying for car rentals and flights, among other costs.

Owen and his family could really use your help. If you would like to make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. And if you would like to follow his progress, Charlie (also incredibly generous) and Sally post regular updates here:  https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/owenmacfadyen .

I hope you all are well in these strange times.
