Overcoming Obstacles for Girls’ Education

Donation protected
At Upendo Academy, we are removing obstacles to education for 144 students from kindergarten to 8th grade in Kiminini, Kenya.

100% of our students cannot afford school.
70% of our students are female (in Kenya many girls are not able to finish secondary school).

But even with these obstacles, we know 100% of our students have the potential to go out and impact the world.

At Upendo Academy the future we are striving to create is one where:

Income
Gender
and Background…

do not decide your level of education or opportunity.

Because we believe God created each of us with value and potential.

HELPING US OVERCOME OBSTACLES

We believe every child has the right to learn and thrive.  So we’re asking you to invest in the future of these 144 students and the thousands that will follow them.

We're raising $27,000 with Dr. Masibo Lumala to build a flush toilet facility, install a playground, and bring a computer lab online.

Computers, flush toilets, and equipment for play are basic amenities that every child needs to continue to develop and grow.

Cost Breakdown:

$4,700 - Computer Lab (computers, desks, internet, security)
$9,200 - Flush Toilet Restrooms
$9,900 - Playground
$3,200 - Admin (fees, permits, engineering)

$27,000 (USD) Total Project Cost

About The Upendo Academy:

Dr. Lumala’s dream for his K-8 students is that each child is given the opportunity to receive a life changing education, no matter their gender, background, or income.  Dr. Lumala is living proof of what can happen when a child is given the gift of education.  Someone invested in him as a young child, gave him a chance at an education his family could not afford, and now he is a professor at a major University and the director of Upendo Academy.

He is a firm believer that one opportunity at education can change a family.

A class of students given that same opportunity can change their nation.

And in this way, a entire school of students has the opportunity to  change the world.

When he returned to his home town in 2008 after completing his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham, he and his wife Rose were heartbroken to see the effects of election violence and an AIDS epidemic on their hometown.

So, they opened their house to displaced children camping in the local churches.

What started out as a short term solution for a group of lost kids, eventually turned into a full blown school of 144 students and 9 staff.

Who am I and why am I raising money?

My name is Erik Scott.  My wife, three daughters and I are from Indiana, and I work in the U.S. Air Force.

I currently volunteer for Upendo as their International Development Officer.

When I first heard about Upendo they had begun work on plans for building a dormitory for its female students.

Some of the girls walk an hour to school and have been assaulted on their walk to school.  A dorm will allow the girls to stay on campus Monday through Friday thus making them less vulnerable to assault.

But I have learned that this is just one obstacle girls in Kenya overcome to receive an education.  In addition to the very real threat of assault, girls in rural Kenya are typically responsible for chores before and after school on top of their school work.  And many are often pulled out or leave the school system before finishing secondary school

Having three girls myself, the goals of Upendo stood out to me.

70% of Upendo’s students are girls.

But this is not a reason for them not to succeed or be a part of impacting the world.

Working with Upendo is a way that we can make a big difference in the lives of hundreds of students, the Kiminini community, the country of Kenya, and the hopefully from there, create positive change throughout the world.
