Outrunning Parkinson's #Miles4Mom
Donation protected
Hi friends near and far!
My mom, everyone's favorite dance floor super star, Janet Blair, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in October 2018. She broke the news to me last January and, needless to say, it has been a challenging year for our family reimagining the future from what we always assumed it would be. We are lucky because my mom was selected to take place in a two-year medical trial that doctors are super optimistic about. There is lots to be thankful for right now--the awesome medical care my mom is receiving, all of the exercise she is able to partake in to continue strengthening her mind and body, as well as her ongoing ability for simple tasks like whisking, writing, and smelling! While we are all positive, we know we are staring down the barrel of a disease that currently has no cure and will progress with time.
This year I will be running a half marathon per month (or more!) to fundraise for Parkinson's research. I feel that this medical trial is a step in the right direction, but there is more that can be done to fight, and ultimately cure, PD! Through my mom's trials, I am constantly reminded to appreciate my body for what it can do, and I want to take this year to celebrate my body and use it for a greater good.
She has flown many miles across the country and around the world to support me in races the last few years, so it is my turn to log some miles for her!
Thank you in advance for your support! Donating, sharing, reposting, or any other means of helping out is greatly appreciated as I take on this year-long endeavor. I am also officially accepting running buddies and any race recommendations :)
A note on the fundraiser: I opted to raise money on a personal page in lieu of a charity page because I want to split the money raised between the Michael J Fox Foundation (which focuses on finding a cure for Parkinson's) and the Houston Area Parkinson's Society (which offers resources to educate and build community amongst those diagnosed with PD in the Houston area). Both of these organizations have touched my family this year and supported us in different ways, so it is only right that I support them back! Funds will NEVER be used for travel or accommodation and will only be used towards race entry fees in the event of a charity bib for a Parkinson's organization.
Thanks again & run on! Blair
