Olivia's Story
I discovered Olivia on Oct 2. The first vet (Kaoru Animal Clinic) said she is a feral 3-4 month old, underweight, and permanently blind from crows pecking in her eyes. I took her home with the intention to foster her to good health. She started getting sick, and I doubted her eye sockets were healthy, so I took her to a new vet for a second opinion.

The second vet (Takekuma Animal Clinic) did a better job in thoroughly examining her, and obviously cared about her well being more in comparison to the first vet. On top of her cold and malnutrition, her bloodwork and tests report she has an infection in her damaged eyeball mass that requires immediate removal surgery. Olivia is currently in the hospital from Oct 5 - Oct 14 and will have both infected eyeball masses removed and her eyelids sealed on Oct 9 by Takekuma Animal Clinic.


The funds raised for this campaign is going only towards her emergency surgery, spay surgery, vaccinations, and first vet bill. I will mother her to good health, and need some help with the unexpected medical expenses for taking in this loving kitten. I will also gladly accept donations towards cat food, litter, and pet winter essentials for the frigid northern Japan weather right around the corner! Campaign - Olivia's bills: Emergency eye surgery: ¥97,605 ($872); First vet bill: ¥4,104 ($37); Spay surgery: ¥10,000 ($90); I also incur exchange rate fees but will handle that on my own! = ¥111,709/$1,000 for Olivia!

The surgery is preformed by Takekuma Animal Clinic (たけくま動物病院). We are located in Japan. I'm American with homes and bills in both countries. The surgery will be paid in JPY converted to USD on my credit card with fees. Finances are EXTREMELY tighter now with Olivia and my own medical issues, and I appreciate any help towards her bills! 


Olivia is a smart kitten and so very loving to me and others. Her personality is calm and friendly, and she loves playing with bells and being snuggled with her head stroked at the neck. She knows my voice well and if nervous or confused calms down when I talk to her. She's learned the layout of my home and I haven't had accidents with her so far from my efforts to guide and teach her how to be a cat there. Even if she did, I've found I'm very patient with her!


This is my first cat and foster situation, and I've learned so much this first week. I'm now very close to Olivia and could never give up on her recovery!

*** A perspective on animals in Japan: When I first found her, I would have definitely given Olivia to a humane animal shelter. Unfortunately Japan doesn't view animals the same way we do in America. The nearest humane shelter is hours away, and reportedly filled to capacity. I'm in the countryside, and even finding vets was limited (Olivia's vet is almost an hour away from me.) Most stray animals here have a bad rep and are put down. I'm afraid if didn't take her in, she likely would have been killed by a "clean the streets" mentality or hit by traffic. Seeing the lack of animal rescue efforts here, the mindset seems to be treating animals more as something to buy at the pet store in the mall, not beings to save or rescue. Knowing Olivia's increased risks for being killed because she is both a stray and "disabled", I could not leave her to suffer. ***
