Last year, when we visited Iguguno, we were able to do many things. We had the cistern completely repaired, as the earthquake aftershocks from the north badly cracked the cistern, making it unusable. The sisters were buying 'salty' water
from the government for their needs....having concern over typhoid.
The new Maluga Farm is beginning to look like a farm! We plowed 20 acres, three years ago so the planting of a corn crop could begin. The small structure that houses the baby animals is where the farm hands sleep and where sister Paulina sleeps when working the farm. The interior has the baby goats on one side, a small fire
pit in the middle, with two army cots on the right side for the farm hands.
This housing compromise left Sister Paulina the option of sleeping with the goats.
While Paulina always attempts to return to Iguguno, nine miles away...sometimes it is impossible. As the Sister in Charge, Paulina has initiated a divided building; half for the farm hands and half for the sisters. We found the structure with only
a few rows of blocks. Knowing the importance of the building, and considering
the safety of the sisters......we were able to finance the completion of the building.
Some years ago we started to gift $500.00 in cash, to all 47 sisters that gather
at Singa Chini for a Christmas Celebration. We were able to gift that this past
year. They purchase items that they rarely can afford for the gathering, cheese,
sausages, ice cream and even a few bottles of wine.
Sister Angel runs the dispensary and was out of medication. We gifted $500.00
to stock her supply for a few months. Purchasing medication in Singida, is more cost effective than bringing medication from the USA, we get more for the money.
I think you are beginning to get the picture......as ever they are desperately in need.
Fun things of our visit; we brought multiple Frisbee Golf Games, for the
school. This was a hoot, watching 250 kids plus teachers learn the game.
We also chopped wood, ground sunflower seeds into beautiful golden oil and
played the traditional 'bridal shower game' of shaking dice and stealing
gifts back and forth. Much laughter was enjoyed by all....everyday!
We gifted each of the 47 sisters a set sheets, underwear, personal items, snacks
etc. This year, we must scale down, we'll bring a small gift for the sisters in the
communities where we stay overnight; Iguguno, Simgida and Singa Chini.
The home of the Iguguno Community is in need of significant repairs. The roof leaks so badly the sisters are unable to sleep in their rooms during the rainy
season. The roof leaks subsequently ruined the ceilings.....which in turn
brought on the mold ! (We will try to sell the current rusted, holey metal
roof.......if only for a small amount....or make a trade for something useable)
We have attached the bid for the new roof. I have told Sister Paulina we will do
what we can to assist in paying for the new roof. BUT, as I am sure you may suspect.....we are asking for your assistance.( Tzu Shillings is 2:1 USA)
We would like to continue to gift the dispensary and the Christmas Gathering,
but in light of what seems to be a MAJOR priority, we may not be able to
continue.......we are therefore respectfully asking for your financial help.
