Out-of-pocket Medical Expenses

November 20th at approximately 1PM, while working on my barn ceiling, the ladder I was working on collapsed sending me 16' to the ground. My left foot was severely cut and my calcaneus (heel bone) was fractured in 3 places. I crawled to my ATV while my foot was bleeding and attempted to connect with neighbors to transport me to an urgent care facilty. It took me about 45 minutes to accomplish this. I was losing a lot of blood, and it was a horrible experience. At arrival, the medical personel told me the wound was too extreme for their facility and that a 45 minute ambulance transport would be neccesary to get me to the nearest hospital. When I arrived at the hospital they again responded that the wound was too extreme and that I needed to be moved to a specialized hospital. Even a compression bandage would not stop the bleeding. After another 1 hour ambulance ride I arrived at the second emergency room. They stopped the bleeding, scheduled me for surgery and admitted me to the hospital. In the 2 hour surgery the following day the surgeons inserted pins, plates and screws to stabilize my fractured heel and attended to a large gash just below my ankle. I spent another day recovering in the hospital before being released. I was told it would 12 weeks before I could put weight on my foot!  My medicare covered some of the costs but not all. The strain of the out-of-pocket expenditure has been catastrophic to my household income. This could not have happened at a worse time, heating costs, animal care, an extremely large repair bill to our work vehicle, mortgage and other costs have lead me to reach out for your help.
