Visit to Rama Cay
In 2011 I had the pleasure of traveling with my son Ben to Rama Cay, a remote island in the Bluefields Lagoon on the eastern coast of Nicaragua. We were invited there by my friend, Rev. Cleveland Macrea, who leads the only church on the island.
The Rama Cay Church is the center of island life.
The people who live on the island of Rama Cay are from the indigenous Rama tribe and are protected by national laws allowing (but rarely supporting) their subsistence way of life on the island.
We had a wonderful 3-day visit, eating local fare and learning to make their famous coconut bread. We had a long talk with local church leaders and visited many households on the island. Their needs a great but their faith in God is strong.
Pastor Cleveland wears sunglasses nearly all the time due to macular degeneration.
An Unexpected Request
Pastor Cleveland and I have been in touch since our visit with messages of greetings and friendship, then recently he reached out to me for help in purchasing a new outboard motor for his panga (fishing boat) called The Messiah Gift. It is a sturdy open boat that can hold maybe 16 people, but it needs a good seaworthy motor to be of any use. Cleveland's proposal for a Yamaha E60HMHDL motor is US$6,100, just a little more than a similar motor would be in the States.
The Messiah Gift is a sturdy panga but we need to get her running!!
My goal is to raise these funds with your generous help and personally deliver them for purchase of the motor in October of this year. I will travel to the island at my own expense and send many beautiful photos of the people and the island.
The funds from this campaign are desperately needed by the people of Rama Cay. They use this sturdy panga for missions to other areas where the Rama live, for education in the town of Bluefields, and for medical emergencies. Thank you for your support!!
