Out of a coma, into a dream!

Hi! I'm Melissa. I'm raising money to help make a dream come true, and not go into bankruptcy while I'm doing it. My dream is to publish a book.

Dreaming has been hard for me over the last couple of decades. In my late 30s, I developed a rare brain disease called episodic ataxia type 2 that took away many of my faculties. I lost my job because I just couldn't work anymore -- I was too disabled. I tried to remain strong, and I did pretty well at keeping my spirits up.

Then a decade ago I was thrown from a horse and landed on my head on a bicycle path. They tell me I died twice on the way to the hospital. I was in a coma for weeks. The traumatic brain injury (TBI)  has affected me greatly.  My memory is shot, so I've learned to write everything down. I have other physical, mental and psychological challenges, which is to be expected because I lost (it really simply vanished) a third of my frontal cortex.

Needless to say, between these two problems, working a regular job is out of the question. I have six children to care for. I used to be the main breadwinner in our family (I was a lawyer) but now my contribution is zero. And the cost of my  medical care is enormous.

But I refuse to stay down.  You know, I never really wanted to be a lawyer. Even as a youngster, what I wanted to do was write. That is my real dream. Writing has always been my strongest talent.  I can and will write a book that will be popular and saleable, and will let me be a contributor again to our budget.  And it will make me feel proud of myself, for the first time in decades.

The first book is going to be about religion, from the point of view of a nonbeliever. The next, a funny book about dialectical behavior therapy. After that, who knows? Perhaps a novel.  How am I so confident about my topics? Because I've already written huge pieces of the books they will become.

I have the first book 3/5 finished. It will be done within a few months. I write 4-6 hours every day -- your contribution won't go to someone who has a dream but no dedication to making it come true.

Thank you for any help you can give me to allow me a few more months of breathing space to make my dram come true. When my book is published, I would be honored if you would let me thank you on the dedication page, by whatever handle you would like to use.

Namaste
