Many of you know that I'm not the type of person that asks for help or money. I tend to tough-it-out and do everything I can to ensure that I can take care of a problem by myself; however, this time I must ask for help. In fact, I am begging for it.
I believe that if I ask you to donate money to a cause, you deserve an explanation as to why, as well as some background information on the person the money is going to benefit.
Why do we need your help?
Our time is running out. We have spoken to a lawyer and need to get started on the process as fast as soon as possible to get his papers for citizenship. Due to the desires of our current president, it has gotten harder to gain citizenship, especially if you crossed the border "illegally." Luckily, our lawyer believes that we have a 90% chance of successfully obtaining his citizenship.
Jorge is a wonderful, honest, hard-working man that deserves to stay in the country that he now considers his home. He works 6 days a week, typically from 10am - 3pm and the 4pm-10pm, as a chef. He has a 3-year old son that my family and I adore. Jorge has paid taxes like an American citizen since he entered the country. He has never been arrested nor committed a crime. He pays monthly child support for his 3-year old son. He has only missed work when he was extremely sick. He rarely drinks. He does not do drugs. He does not drive without a license, even though he knows how. The only law he has ever broken was crossing the border in the first place. He took his first vacation in 10 years this month to come with his son and myself to meet my grandparents. He is an honest family-man.
What are we asking for?
The money we are asking for will go to the fees for the lawyer, the three sets of filing fees required by the American government, the flight to and from the Mexican embassy, the hotel costs during the time at the embassy, and the medical and background screening at the embassy required prior citizenship and entry to the Unites States are granted.
What have we done to help ourselves?
As I mentioned before, I am not usually one to ask for help. Before I had met Jorge, I was struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and PTSD after a traumatic event occurred during college. He realized that I needed help improving my mental health and he helped made me realize it wasn't "weak" of me to get the help I needed. Iwent to Peachford Hospital for an evaluation. He stood by my side, telling me that my well-being was worth the expense, even if we would be paying it off for awhile. I was inpatient for close to week and out-patient for two weeks. I was able to get the help I needed and my life has improved drastically; however, the expenses will be hindering us for awhile. This is the main reason we have not been able to come up with the money we need.
I have always wanted to have an outdoor wedding ceremony with a beautiful dress, family and friends from all over coming to celebrate our marriage; however, keeping my family together is more important than those dreams. Instead of wedding gifts and formal celebrations, I ask that you assist us in staying together.
Jorge's journey from Mexico
When he was 18 years old, he left his home to start his journey to the United States. His parents did not want him to go, as it was a dangerous journey; however, he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his brother and sister.
His father knew a man that could help him get to United States. He paid $2000, a lot less than the politically correct way, to the man that set-up his trip (Interesting fact: This man was running for President of Mexico around the same time.) At the beginning of his journey, the nearly 400 people split into many groups that went in different directions. He was part of a group of around 40 people that walked for two weeks in the deserts of Mexico and Texas. They could only bring one backpack with them, filled with black clothes and minimal food and water. They could not bring a phone or any personal items, basically starting their lives over once they reached America. It was a difficult journey: hot during the day and cold at night and by the time he made it to Texas, his clothes were loose because he had lost so much weight. All 40 people in his group assisted each other. They all made it to America.
The next part of his journey was to California, where he began working at Jack and the Box right away. He lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with 5 other people. Once he made enough to finish the last part of his journey, he paid another $800 to get to Atlanta, GA, where he has lived ever since.
Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. We will still be working hard to contribute to the amount we need and will end this fundraiser once we have paid off all of our fees, even if we do not reach our "goal."
