Our Veterans Need Help - May Close Doors Soon

The House of Heroes Chattahoochee Valley Chapter is a non-profit organization headquartered in Columbus, GA. Our mission is to “recognize and honor military and public service veterans and/or their spouses who have served our country faithfully and sacrificially.” The HOH serves its community by making repairs and improvements, such as building ramps and fixing roofs and toilets, in the homes of veterans and their spouses - all at zero cost to the individuals. Over the past 20 years since its inception, the HOH has served over 1100 homes in Columbus and the surrounding areas and in 2019 we served 76 homes. Our projects include:

- Installing a ramp for an elderly spouse who had fallen down the stairs outside of her house a week earlier (completed)
- Installing a handicap shower for a 96-year-old veteran who served in WWII, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War (waiting list)
- Fixing up a kitchen with water drainage issues, dislocated cabinets, and damaged flooring (completed)

However, 2020 has been an unprecedented time for our team and our veterans due to the impact of Covid-19. Although we have been able to make improvements in 31 homes this year, Covid-19 has affected the type of projects we have been able to tackle. Most of them have been small projects, such as sink and toilet repair, that were not very costly and did not require large groups of volunteers. We have limited the scope of our projects, because Covid-19 has stalled many of our fundraising efforts and negatively impacted the availability of grants, a substantially large part of our funding. As of June 2020, we have only received about 17% of our usual funding, whereas in June of 2019 we had received about 50% of our usual funding. Thus, we have not been able to take on many of the large projects, such as bathroom restoration and plumbing issues that our veterans need.

We need your help to ensure we do not have to close our doors next month and lay off many of our workers who have been at the HOH for years and have made it their life’s work to serve those who have served our country.  Furthermore, our waiting list to serve veterans is growing rapidly every single day, because we simply do not have the funds to complete the projects that these individuals need. Please donate anything that you can via GoFundMe or our website at https://houseofheroescvc.org/. To support this cause, 100% of the proceeds go towards projects to repair veterans’ homes.

Also, follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates! We’re working hard to organize a few events, including a date auction and a silent auction for a donated item from a well-known band native to GA, and you do not want to miss out!
