Our Ashley is Fighting Breast Cancer (Ashley Mathis, Chatsworth, GA)

Written by Ashley's cousin, Jennifer Pickert

Our darling Ashley gained her wings yesterday  afternoon
She may not have spoken in her 32 years in words that we could hear but she spoke in other ways.
- her welcoming smile spoke of kindness, friendship and tolerance
- her faith as deep as an ocean spoke to me that we could all learn a little more about life and understanding of what we can’t see with our own eyes
- Her competitive nature spoke of the fighter inside that wasn’t limited by her physical limitations. The pure will to beat the odds when the cards were stacked against her.
- The hundreds of friends and family that stood by her spoke of the love this girl radiated and how we wanted her to win.
- I have no doubt she won in the end, the sheer magnitude of love she gave and love that surrounded her was more than mere spoken words can express

Here is the latest update on Ashley from Renea:  2/16/19

I don't know how to even begin. Today is Ashley's birthday. She's 32 today and I can't begin to express how much joy that she has brought to our lives. When I was pregnant with Ashley doctor thought something was wrong with her and of course I asked him what could be done. His response was abortion. And my response to the doctor was that God may take her but he would never abort her. The nurse was super nice and said good answer Mom. Well the doctor was wrong because she was perfectly normal until birth and the cord was around her neck and cut off the oxygen. Probably would have been a different story if I had not been left all day in labor. But we know that God has a plan for ALL of us. Today is her 3rd week at Gordon Hospital in the ICU unit on a ventilator. Unfortunately the cancer has spread so not giving us much hope at this point. We have decorated her room and they are going to back off the sedation meds so we can spend time with her this afternoon and give her a party. Praying that she is awake enough to enjoy time with her family. Please keep praying for her and our family and friends. Ashley has touched so many lives with her beautiful smile and personality even though she has never spoken a word. But she's princess talking hands and thank God has been able to communicate with us. We are heartbroken and devastated but I am never going to give up. Trusting God. I don't know how anyone can go without God and prayers in their lives. Ashley says God's got this. Thankfully she knows who to trust. We want to thank everyone for the prayers and support and cards and any act of kindness to our family. We greatly appreciate it and are truly blessed.

Please pray for Ashley and our family. Ashley was put back on the VPap last night to help with her breathing. Her right lung is full of fluids today, and they are going to have to drain some of those fluids from her. Unfortunately, the pathology report shows that she has cancer cells in the fluids that were drained from her right lung. We don't even know what to do at this point except cry out to God and ask for everyone to pray for her. She is still in ICU at Gordon Hospital, and has been here since January 25th. Thank you so much for your prayers, support, and everything else that has been done for our family.

Ashley’s parents, Dewey and Renea have used all of their vacation days during Ashley’s illness, and are currently on FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act). They are receiving no income at this time, so every donation would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Friends and Family,
Our precious Ashley was diagnosed with breast cancer last week. If you know Ashley, you are probably aware of her many other health issues including Cerebral Palsy, Worster-Drought Syndrome, seizure disorder, and Gastroparesis with a feeding tube.

Ashley compensated for her inability to communicate verbally by learning sign language at an early age. She has endured many hospitalizations during her 31 years of life. Her loving spirit, never ending smile, and faith in God shine through in everything she does. Ashley is a fighter; she’s the comeback kid! And now, she’s in the fight of her life. She is facing weeks of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, while continuing to deal with all her other health challenges.

Even before the cancer diagnosis, Ashley required around-the-clock care, lovingly provided by her mom (Renea), dad (Dewey), brother (Kent), and an 8 hour a day care giver.

Ashley has a loving family and friends with a great support system. While the treatments continue, Renea will quit her job to care for Ashley, and Dewey will likely be out of work at times as well. People have asked how they can help, and that’s why we’re here. Anything you can contribute to lessen the financial burden will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, The Ashley Mathis Team!
