Our mom NEEDS a portable (electric) wheelchair.

Hi! My name is Katie, and I'm fundraising for mom, Kristin. As most know, she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's) in late 2021. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness/loss and severely impacts physical functions. The cause is unknown, and a cure isn't available. Life expectancy ranges from 2-5 years. So many of our friends and family have already helped us tremendously with this unexpected and life-changing diagnosis. However, as the disease progresses, it seems as if we only need more and more. My mom was thankfully given an electric wheelchair, custom for her, which has allowed her to leave the garage and go up the street. Woo-Hoo! The new wheelchair will not fit in any car we own, and we aren't in the position to buy a minivan or truck to haul it. We wish our mom could be cured, but we have all realised that it's not possible currently, so we try to live the best we can with what we have. Getting my mom a portable electric wheelchair would help us with that. Most portable electric wheelchairs are under 60 pounds (light enough for most of my family to lift), FDA-approved, and suitable for multiple weather events and outings. The wheelchair would allow my mom to go out and enjoy time with us instead of being stuck in the house. We wouldn’t have to worry about having someone strong enough to push her, a huge concern with using just a regular wheelchair. Various companies are selling different varieties at different prices. I have found the average to be about $2,800. Any donations exceeding will be used for other products to help my mom or donated to the ALS association.
