 What started as a normal morning changed our lives in a matter of minutes.

 My husband, José Ángel Díaz, left our home that morning just like any other day, heading to work. Only about five minutes after leaving, he was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident after a vehicle made a maneuver in front of him, causing José Ángel to collide with the vehicle and take the force of the impact directly to his body and head.

 José Ángel is only 24 years old. He has his entire life ahead of him. We have been married for three years, have built a life together, and he is also the very loved dad of our three cats, who are waiting for him to come back home.

 The accident left José Ángel with multiple serious injuries throughout his body, including an injury to his lung with air trapped around it, a fractured rib, serious injuries to his pelvis, a fractured knee, and multiple fractures in both arms, both wrists, and his fingers. One of the fractures in his right arm was an open fracture, meaning the bone broke through the skin. He also sustained some minor injuries to his head.

 Doctors also discovered blood clots in his chest, which have made his condition more delicate and have prevented his medical team from moving forward with the rest of the surgeries he still needs.

 José Ángel remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in delicate condition.

 So far, doctors have only been able to perform one of the surgeries he needs. Because of the blood clots and the risks involved, his medical team has had to postpone his remaining surgeries until it is safe to proceed.

 We still don’t know exactly what the coming days, weeks, and months will look like. We know that his recovery will take time and that he will be unable to work while he heals. Right now, our only priority is José Ángel’s health, his recovery, and being by his side as he fights to get back to the life and family waiting for him at home.

 We created this GoFundMe simply to give anyone who wishes to support us during this unexpected and difficult time a way to do so. There is absolutely no obligation to donate. Any contribution, regardless of the amount, will help our family navigate the financial uncertainty ahead while José Ángel remains hospitalized and unable to work, and as we prepare for everything his recovery may require.

 We live in Miami, a city where everyone always seems to be in a hurry, rushing from one place to another. After everything that has happened, I want to take a moment to say something not only as José Ángel’s wife, but simply as a woman whose life changed in a matter of seconds.

We can go to bed one night believing that tomorrow will be another normal day, without knowing just how quickly life can change. We never imagined that an ordinary morning could turn our entire world upside down.

 And to the motorcycle community, I especially want to say: please take care of yourselves and take care of one another. Too often, motorcyclists are overlooked on the road. You are more vulnerable, you are harder for drivers to see, and a single careless decision can change a life and an entire family forever. Look out for one another, ride as safely as you can, and never assume that another driver has seen you.

 And to everyone sharing the road with a motorcyclist: please look twice. Slow down. Give them space. Remember that underneath that helmet is a person who is loved and has a family waiting for them at home.

 Mi esposo, José Ángel Díaz, salió de nuestra casa esa mañana como cualquier otro día para dirigirse a su trabajo. Apenas unos cinco minutos después de haber salido, sufrió un grave accidente de motocicleta después de que un vehículo realizara una maniobra frente a él, provocando que José Ángel impactara contra el vehículo y recibiera directamente en su cuerpo y cabeza la fuerza del impacto.

 El accidente dejó a José Ángel con múltiples lesiones graves en diferentes partes de su cuerpo, incluyendo una lesión en el pulmón con aire acumulado alrededor, una costilla fracturada, lesiones graves en la pelvis, una fractura en la rodilla y múltiples fracturas en ambos brazos, ambas muñecas y los dedos de las manos. Una de las fracturas de su brazo derecho fue una fractura abierta, lo que significa que el hueso atravesó la piel. También presenta algunos golpes leves en la cabeza.

Son mucho más vulnerables, para los conductores puede ser más difícil verlos y una sola decisión imprudente puede cambiar para siempre una vida y la de toda una familia. Cuídense entre ustedes, manejen con toda la precaución posible y nunca den por hecho que el otro conductor los ha visto.
