Our little hero Hayden defeating the odds

My name is Emma Moorby and I’m trying to raise money for my sister Laura and her family. Here is her story.

We had our beautiful little boy, Hayden Glover Traynor, on Tuesday 12th March at 5.08pm.
Unfortunately he had massive complications at birth and nearly didn’t  make it through the night. The specialists in Canberra didn't know what was wrong with him, but tried absolutely everything they could, he was only hours away from being taken from us, we were told to call our families and everything, it was bloody horrible.
Thankfully a Dr had called Westmead children's hospital in Sydney and they flew in an amazing team of leading specialists and their equipment from Sydney to ACT to perform an operation to stabilise him so he could be transported to Westmead children's hospital that night, this had never been done before, the patient has always been bought to the machine, but our little boy was just too sick and wouldn't have made it there.
They put him on a machine called ECMO, which is essentially life support but it pumps the blood and oxygen externally. They then transported him by road as air was too risky and wouldn't have been able to fit the team of staff needed to keep him alive. I also had to travel up by car, I couldn't go with him.
They done scans and tests when he got to Sydney Wednesday night and all day Thursday. Then they performed open heart surgery on him first thing Friday morning and they worked on him all day, he went in at 8am and they finished just before 5pm, it went really well.

So the veins at the bottom of his lungs are supposed to go into the left side of his heart, instead they were joining together to a chamber at the back of the heart and pumping blood to elsewhere where it wasn't supposed to go. So basically they joined the veins to the correct part of the heart and the lungs are cooperating well (she was a bit concerned how they and other organs might react) but she seemed really happy with the outcome.
He also had a hole between the top 2 valves which was pumping blue blood onto the wrong chamber, so she fixed it up too.
His lungs had collapsed shortly after birth, while in ACT and needed to have air and fluid drained from them, she wasn't sure if he would need to go back on the ECMO but said not to be disheartened if he did, but he didn't.
People don't know just what these surgeons do for people.... they were in there ALL day with him, an entire team working tirelessly to save our babies life!
Words can't explain how grateful we are!
She also managed to repair the main artery in his neck that the ECMO was in, often it can't be repaired. It required 2 very large tubes to be inserted into his neck, one for the blood and one for the oxygen.

So at the moment they are just letting him rest and trying to drain all the fluid from him.
He'll still be in a coma for a while yet though.
I still haven't held him and won't be able to for a while either. He can't be moved or touched very much.
