Our Global Medical Brigade Trip

Healthcare is something that many of us, as Canadians, take for granted. When you get sick, you never have to choose between seeing a doctor or feeding your entire family for the week. However this is a decision that many Hondurans have to make on a daily basis, as more than1.5 million Hondurans do not have access to health services ( Carmenate-Milian, L., et al. 2017). Even more shocking as of 2016, more than 66% of the population live in poverty in Honduras (Worldbank, 2017). We believe that basic healthcare accessibility should be a human right for all people, not just the privileged and that is why we are taking part in this amazing student-led initiative.
We are students from McMaster University, and are a part of the McMaster Global Medical Brigades. This summer we are going to a remote, and rural community in Honduras which otherwise would have limited to no access to medical care. We will provide access to health services alongside doctors, staff and local leaders as part of the GMB program. We will be working with physicians to provide patient consults, prescribe medication and treatments for acute illnesses and more. Not only will we provide healthcare accessibility, but we will be able to partner with local community members to educate children and adults about the importance of key health practices. Through helping these communities we hope to empower and leave behind a sustainable health system for generations to come.
As aspiring medical students, this is a once in a lifetime learning opportunity for us as we will be able to develop our background in the healthcare field while giving back to an under resourced community.
In times like today when we hear about so many atrocities, we feel it is that much important to create positive, sustainable change in poverty ridden communities. It’s our hope that we will be the change makers of tomorrow, and lead the pathway for future brigaders.
