Our father's funeral fund

Donation protected
Our father Alrick passed away this week after a short battle with brain cancer. It has been the most painful and trying experience for our tight-knit family. As we mourn this momentous loss, we are reaching out to family and friends for any possible financial aid to help us plan a meaningful celebration of our father's life.

Our dad's decline in health started with mere headaches seven months ago.

On Christmas Day, a biopsy at Hamilton General Hospital catapulted our family of five into a journey that we could not have foreseen.

After New Years, our father Alrick was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma in the brain.

But in classic Alrick fashion, our dad took his diagnosis as just another obstacle to clear.

After what seemed to be months of successful chemotherapy, the cancer spread. And the day before Father's Day our family was told that his illness had become inoperable.

While the doctor gave him only one to two days, dad gave us six.

Our father passed away at the young age of 49 with his family by his side.

Throughout his life, our dad was never the type to dwell on issues. He always kept going forward. As the jokester of the family, he was known by everyone for his smile, his exuberant presence, classic (and often inappropriate) dad jokes and his handsome good looks (which he never let anyone forget).

A father of three and husband to his wife for almost 26 years, he was undoubtedly a family man.

Now as we embark on this unexpected journey without a main pillar of our family, we also face a number of financial burdens.

Since our dad fell ill last winter, our mother has been his caregiver and neither have been working. Now as we prepare to lay our dad to rest, we face huge funeral costs that our savings simply can't cover. Our mom (and dad) never liked asking for help, but in this time of need we are reaching out for support from all who have touched our lives.

So we are asking friends and family — whoever can spare — to help us fund the most loving funeral for our father. Any little bit helps.

If you knew our father in any way, thank you for being a part of his life. If you know any of the Bakers, we all thank you for your kind thoughts and support. And a special thanks goes out to the staff at Juravinski Hospital who were an incredible support and part of our lives over the last year.

If you can't spare anything, we completely understand. Instead, go home today and blast some 90s slow jams — just a little bit too loud so as to disturb your neighbours — in memory of Alrick, our larger-than-life, stud of a dad.

Thank you.
