Medical Mission to Nicaragua

I am a few months away from my goal of becoming a nurse!

I started down this path a few years ago after some family medical emergencies exposed me to the vast world of health care and made me realize that at some point in our lives we all need a nurse.  This mid-life career change has strengthened my belief that everyone deserves access to trained health care. I've traveled extensively and am well aware that many people, particularly in the developing world, lack medical care just as they lack access to food, clean water, shelter and clothing.  As human beings, we all need these essentials and the vagaries of birthplace should not determine a person's access to them.   Becoming a nurse is one concrete way I can work towards justice.

The Trip - June 20-27, 2015
When I came across the opportunity to travel with some other Northeastern University students to San Ramon Nicaragua on a medical mission with the group Corner of Love, I jumped at it. This mission will benefit my nursing training as I will be able to interact with patients who face a unique set of challenges because they live in a rural setting with limited healthcare. I believe that to develop effective care – and foster compassion – it is critical to understand what really impedes and/or facilitates health for particular patient populations and contexts. I consider it a privilege to be part of this mission and learn from those I would serve.

To learn more about the work of this organization, check out the video from their 2013 mission trip.  As you can imagine, it is expensive to provide medical care, dental care, and clothing and to help build sustainable facilities.  Volunteers pay our own airfare, a fee to participate, and donate towards the cost of the supplies.

I need your help! Any amount you can donate towards my total goal of $2,100 will be gratefully accepted.  Some of my friends have already sent me money (you know who you are!) so I already have a start to my travel fund.  Pictures and videos will most definitely be forthcoming. Thank you all so much for helping me learn to make the world a little better.

Peace and best wishes,
Sam
