This is the story of Ivka, told by her boyfriend Ivo:
Every year in Bulgaria, on 8th of December we celebrate the student fest. This year, as usual, we decided to celebrate in the mountain. We set forth on 6th December. We were travelling on the highway, and suddenly we crashed, because of a hole in the road. In Bulgaria many people die in such circumstances and for us this situation is ridiculous. After we were taken to the hospital, the doctors told us that Iveta had heavy brain injuries with fracture in the basis of the skull and hemorrhages in the brain, artificial breathing with machine.We suppose that her head had been hit in the road and the highway fence. On the first day she had a life-saving surgery and she’s been kept for one month in medicamentous coma.She had several operations. The last two months she has been in persistent vegetative state with no conscious and we’re expecting her to wake up. In Bulgaria, unlike many other countries, when the patients are stabilized and begin to breathe on their own, after 3 months, they are dehospitalized, to go home. There are many people in this condition, more than 400 people, whom our hospitals can’t take care for. Iveta most probably will be one of them, which means that her parents have to pay on their own for the treatment and her stay in the hospital. Until this moment they’ve spent over 30 000 leva(almost 20k $) for her surgeries and medications. Their savings are running low and they are unable to face the financial problem on their own. Nowadays healthcare is very expensive.
We are really thankful for your support and understanding. We all hope that Iva will wake up soon and she may live a fulfilling life.
Update: Ivka would need so much personal care and treatments in the next month, including an operation on the scalp, so we are hoping to raise £5000 which would go such a long way and cover most of the costs. Please, help us save a life, improve a life, a young life full of fighting spirit and promise! We won't give up, Ivka won't give up, hopefully you won't give up on us too.
