Osteosarcoma bone cancer amputation and chemo

On Monday May 17, 2020 I received the news that our 8 year old Zeus has osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his left rear leg in the knee joint. We took him in because of a limp and intermittently not bearing weight on it. His regular vet thought he might need knee surgery and referred us to a specialist to perform the surgery. At this visit, Dr. Little took his own xrays which clearly showed the cancer in his bone. We were offered euthanasia or amputation of the left rear leg followed by 4 to 6 rounds of chemotherapy to rid him off any remaining cancer cells in his blood. If we were to do nothing, he was given 2 to 3 months at best because this cancer is extremely aggressive and spreads very rapidly, usually first to the lungs. Not to mention the pain he is enduring. His primary vet, the surgeon vet, and the holistic vet all say that we have caught this condition very early and his chest xray shows no metastasis  to his lungs. We have decided to try for him as he is just absolutely full of life. He is an extremely happy dog.  The cost of his surgery, medications, chemotherapy, and donation to Yale University on his behalf, for a very promising cancer vaccine, is going to run $10,000.00 in bills. We feel like we at least owe him that much....to at least try and save him, if only for another year, an extra 8 months of the unconditional love and joy he brings us, it would be worth all of it! The amputation is set for Tuesday  May 26. He will then go to UGA once every three weeks for 4 to 6 rounds of chemotherapy to try and rid any free radical cancer cells left in his blood after the bone infected has been removed. The  trial for the Yale University vaccine has expired. In order to get it sent to UGA, it requires a 1,000.00 donation to Yale University. Just maybe, he can become a canine survivor of a deadly bone cancer and be one of the few that could go on another 2 to 5 years. Every dollar counts and will be GREATLY appreciated, especially by Zeusy.
