I am a below the knee amputee at 68 soon to be 69 year old male. My current leg no longer allows me to move as well as I used to. Also, the fit of the socket has completely gone away. New technology in prosthetic legs helps older less mobile person as myself from falling, climbing steps cleanly and assuredly.
Since I am on Medicare and supplement program, it is hoped that a good portion of the new leg will be covered, hope is the key word here. The term medically necessary comes into play in getting better technology. Due to strict regulations and documentation, it has be reviewed by a review board who tend not to allow what would be more beneficial to said amputees.
Prior injuries due to a horrific motorcycle accident in '88 involved a crushed pelvis (both sides), grade 3C lower leg fracture, and other specific injuries. After 14 operations of varying degrees, my leg was amputated in '90. I continued to work till my retirement in 2015. I have 26 operations to the foot and hips total, most recent is when I fell and broke my femur badly. Combine this with a right knee full replacement after balancing on that leg for 26+ years. I am currently seeing a Doctor of physiatry to help us with the required documents and verbiage. Since we don't have the overall cost but is assumed to be about $20,000+, the assumption that Medicare will 75% of the leg.
How soon is the rest of the amount is needed, I think will be by end of August of this year if all the requirements are covered.
I have been retired some 4 years now, and was hoping that knee replacement would make thing better, but because of all the other skeletal injuries I have I have to use a cane or crutch to ambulate. This is a last ditch effort to see if I can get back to walking normally and unassisted.
Finally I have never asked for monetary assistance in all of my medical conditions, but being on SS and a small retirement pension, my wife and I have limited funds now that we are in our "golden years".
