Orlando's Future

“Try and understand what part you have to play in the world...discover what part you can play, and then go for it.” Ian MacKellen

My name is Orlando and I am an actor.  I’ve been acting since I was three and grew up in a family of passionate performers and educators. I just graduated from high school and have been accepted to Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan for a post graduate year. I am beyond thrilled!  This exceeds my wildest dreams: working with my peers and betters and learning from world class teachers in an environment that places artistic discipline and creative collaboration as its highest priorities.

We are so grateful for the generosity of the school in giving me a nearly full scholarship.  It is an elite program with a hefty price tag.  However, there remains several thousand dollars in tuition, fees, uniforms, transportation, materials and necessary purchases (including the required personal computer - a Mac)!

My family supports me in this dream and as artists themselves, have been my primary teachers. They have gone above and beyond to afford me opportunities and training throughout my life, despite limited means.  My high school drama teacher has also been a mentor.  As an alum of IAA, it was her encouragement that guided me towards the post-grad year.

Neither my parents nor I were born into privilege or even large families. I live with my mom in Vermont and for years, she has taken whatever work she can to live a modest life, stay afloat and help me pursue my craft. I have taken advantage of all the artistic opportunities I can here, but now, it’s time that I move on to continue my training in larger pools.

My mom (Margo Whitcomb) and I write this appeal in the hopes that there might be those among you who could contribute something to this cause without incurring hardship and with pleasure, not obligation. If that is the case, any amount would be greatly appreciated. And if not, we understand since our means are limited as well. You can count on me to spend these funds wisely, to make full use of this extraordinary opportunity and grow as much as I can.
