Sooo as some of you may already know, I am now approaching the end of my nursing degree and have been accepted to attend an international clinical placement in Cape Town, South Africa - woohoo!! I have found the two loves of my life (nursing and travel) and combined them and will be jetting off on the 22nd of October 2018 for three weeks.
Myself and six other students will complete our clinical rotation in collaboration with the University of Cape Town and SHAWCO to provide community nursing care to six poverty-stricken communities in local townships that have little to no access to health services.
To give you an idea of what we will be up against the image attached is of a mobile nursing clinic where we will be operating from. We will be relocating six of these clinics each day to a different community to provide free health care and treatment for those who cannot afford it.
On average at each location, we will treat over 100 local people for a range of medical conditions such as respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, diarrhoea, dehydration, fevers and other non-speciality diseases.
We also provide screenings for prevalent conditions such as cervical cancer and HIV as well as preventative measures such as immunisations, wound care, pap smear screenings and health education whilst supplying free primary healthcare medications.
The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to raise funds to purchase medical supplies that are vital for these communities that will continue to benefit the local people long after our mission has ended.
