I am creating this page for an employee of mine, Ork Chhuom. Ork is a Cambodian refugee who has been working since her arrival in the United States a few decades ago. She spent over 20 years at her previous job working for an employer who didn't have much concern for her or any of her fellow work associates. She was making $9 an hour when she left that job. When she started working with us, she would get calls from her former employer every single day, asking for solutions to problems they couldn't solve. Every time they called she would help them out. They were taking advantage of her.
When she started working with me, she weighed 83lbs. She knew something was wrong, but she didn't have the means to address it. Once she had health insurance, she went to the doctor and was diagnosed with diabetes. She was tired and she was desperate. Despite that, she showed up every single day and she never complained. She worked very hard. In truth, she didn't have a choice. She was doing everything she could to keep a roof over her family's head. Ork lives with her two teenage daughters, her sister and her niece. They are fighting very hard to make it through each day.
As I said, she didn't have much of a choice. We tried to do everything we could to accommodate her but it hit a point where I simply could not let her work anymore. She could barely walk. She had dizzy spells from the medication she was given. Her weight loss left her with very little physical strength. I was utterly devastated. I knew I was going to have to tell her that she couldn't work anymore. I knew what that meant for her and her family. She was going to have to go on temporary disability. This caused a great financial strain for her and her family. They have had to turn to their church for help with keeping their lights on and their water running.
Why am I writing this and not her? Simply put, Ork will not ask anyone for help. She will do everything in her power to avoid asking anyone else for anything, no matter the circumstances. She is one of the most humble human beings I have ever known. I have reached out to help her numerous times and it is always a fight. Why? Because, in her mind, there is always someone else out there who needs it more than she does. That is who she is. She will put the entire world in front of herself. I witnessed this over and over and over again. This is one of the many reasons why I have an enormous amount of respect for her.
Her health issues did not end with her diabetes diagnosis. She has had ongoing stomach issues that doctors are still trying to figure out. Recently, doctors told her that she has an H. pylori infection. Because of all this, her family is having to make decisions no Americans should ever have to face, whether or not to pay for a doctors appointment or a utility bill. They are struggling mightily.
