On October 27th 2012 I brought home a sweetheart of a dog from the Austin Animal Center. The staff there all said she was truly one in a million. Previously a stray, she came with a clean bill of health (intact) and was reported at six months of age. I agreed to take Leia in to my vet to get her spayed, as per their condition of the adoption.

Having recently moved to Austin to work on a Star Wars game, I decided to name my new friend Leia. When I adopted Leia I was still reeling from the loss of my first dog ever - an overweight 6 year old lab with fatty tumors all over his body. I loved that dog, but I lost him in just 4 months when a tumor on his spleen ruptured and left him bleeding internally. I didn't have any savings to afford the $4,000 surgery at the time and I had to let him go. Learning from my experience, the first thing I did was look into pet insurance for Leia.

When I dropped Leia off to get her spayed, the vet ran a standard blood test and discovered that her BUN and CREA levels were highly elevated. They told me that if Leia were a human, she would need to be on dialysis right now. Unfortunately, our only solution was an IV drip and overnight observation. I hadn't even had her for more than a week, and I had already incurred my first two thousand dollar bill. I was determined not to lose another dog, and reached out to my family who generously offered their help. We saved Leia that day, and I've had her ever since.

Leia is my whole world. For as long as I've had her, I would drive home from work to visit her for a few short minutes each day during my lunch break. I take her everywhere I can, and constantly ask "Can Leia come?" when invited out. She's been back to overnight facilities three times since our initial discovery of her kidney disease, and racked up over $10,000 in medical bills - some of it covered by Trupanion, but with the renal failure listed as a preexisting condition I was left paying out of pocket for enormous bills.

When my contract job in Austin ended, Leia and I drove back home to New York together, and when I was rehired we drove back down to Austin. For two years, Leia has shown no significant signs of her renal failure. She and I are inseparable, but after her condition began to deteriorate these past few days I find myself sitting at home without her by my side. This time, after so many bills, I'm tapped out. I maxed out my credit card tonight, and my family has little to offer. If I'm to have any chance at saving my sweet girl, I'm going to need your help.
